November Song
(Hungrytown)
© 2006 Rebecca Hall & Ken Anderson.
We wrote this song together, changing the chord progression and melody as we went along. Our house overlooks a state forest, so a lot of the images were inspired by what we see from our living room window. In some ways, this is a sister piece to "Troubles Change Direction"--both songs are inspired by the beautiful, haunting and occasionally disturbing imagery appearing in so many of Townes Van Zandt's songs. Ken went all-out with his '60s-style folk-rock production on this one. RH
Through the hills as the streams do flow
That's the way she always seems to go
As autumn trees burn against the sky
So shines the color in my true love's eyes.
The summer grass it grows green and high
And bows before her as she walks by.
November chill turns the fields to gold
I hate to leave her but I'm bound to go.
Jumping high you can catch the sun
Turn the clock back when the day is done
Teach the sea to forsake the shore
Stop the young men marching off to war.
